Als erste und aus der praktischen Notwendigkeit heraus reagierten die bundesdeutschen Volkshochschulen im Rahmen ihrer Bildungsarbeit auf den modernen Analphabetismus. Die gestiegene Nachfrage an Rechtschreibkursen machte es erforderlich, sich über die employer und die Gestaltung entsprechender Maßnahmen völlig neue Gedanken zu machen. Den Volkshochschulen und ihren Mitarbeitern kommt im Hinblick auf die Konzeption und Durchführung von Alphabetisierungsmaßnahmen eine Pionierrolle zu. Im Gegensatz dazu ist der Analphabetismus in der Erziehungswissenschaft auch heute noch kein verbreitetes Forschungsthema. In der vorliegenden wissenschaftlichen Arbeit wird sich nicht damit zufrieden gegeben Begriffe, Größenordnungen und Ursachen für Probleme beim Schriftspracherwerb im Jugendlichen- und Erwachsenenalter zu erläutern und darzustellen. Vielmehr geht es darum, aus dieser Kenntnis eine Notwendigkeit für Alphabetisierungsmaßnahmen abzuleiten und praktische Konsequenzen zu ziehen. Es werden unterschiedliche Schriftsprachentwicklungsmodelle, Vermittlungskonzepte und -methoden vorgestellt und im Hinblick auf ihre Anwendbarkeit im Rahmen von Alphabetisierungsmaßnahmen überprüft. Der praktische Teil beschäftigt sich mit der Planung und Durchführung eines Alphabetisierungskurses mit Patienten der Forensischen Psychiatrie des Klinikums „St. Georg“ in Leipzig. Neben einer Umfeldanalyse im Hinblick auf die Besonderheiten der Arbeit in einer juristischen Verwahrungsanstalt werden diagnostische Methoden vorgestellt, die im Vorfeld mit den Kursteilnehmern zur Erhebung der Lernvoraussetzungen für den Schriftspracherwerb durchgeführt wurden. Am Beispiel eines Kursteilnehmers werden die Untersuchungsergebnisse dargestellt. Das methodische Vorgehen bei der Durchführung des Kurses wird anhand einer ausgewählten Kurssequenz beschrieben.
