REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

 

Report Directly to:

  • Board of Governors
  • Direction, supervision and guidance in the operation of the school sector

Report Indirectly to:

  • Parents, relevant wings of the Ministry of Education – DEBS, PEO, Examinations boards

Direct Reports:

  • This position reports directly to the Board of Governors via the Board Chair

Indirect Reports:

  • Works as a team member of the school community, other co-operating partners such as ISAZ and Heads Associations and reports on all issues affecting the School.

JOB PURPOSE:

 

Responsible for providing effective professional leadership and general management of the School for delivery of academic and strategic vision while ensuring quality and safety of all pupils in accordance with approved curricula and mission.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

The School Manager will be responsible for discharging the responsibilities stated below:

 

Strategy and Planning- 20%

  • Develop a strategic plan for the School, in consultation with the Management and Board of Governors, including the preparation of a staffing and resource plan.
  • Engage staff in devising and agreeing the School\'s work plan.
  • Review the performance of the School in terms of its objectives as stated in its strategic plan and in its staffing and resource plan.

Governance- 10%

  • Serve as non-voting member of the Board attending all Board meetings and functions.
  • Keep the Board Chair informed of all aspects of school operations.
  • Bring to the Board’s attention issues that may require Board action or Board education.
  • Communicate all Board policies and changes to the teaching staff and non-teaching staff.
  • Serve as a resource for the Board in developing new policies and initiatives.
  • Serve as a resource for the Treasurer and the Board on financial matters.
  • Represent the Board and Board decisions and policies to parents when appropriate.

Operations Management- 20%

  • Remain informed of trends, research and legislation that may affect school management, operation and policy.
  • Maintain a comprehensive set of records on students, staff and prospective students.
  • Establish the annual schedule for instructional programs, ensuring consistency with the school’s mission and instructional goals.
  • Oversee the instructional programs of the school, lesson plans and observing classes on a regular basis.
  • Establish procedures for evaluation and selection of instructional materials and equipment.
  • Formulate and implement the curriculum of the school with the approval of the Board.
  • Ensure that the physical properties of the school as well as the demised properties are adequate for the implementation of the education programs.
  • Undertake various research for improved management of the school

Finance and Resource Management-20%

  • Execute the financial policy set by the Board of Directors, including communicating board policy and decisions to parents and perspective parents
  • Oversee all financial matters, including financial planning and sustainability, resource allocation, the identification of new sources of income, the monitoring of expenditure to ensure that it is within appropriate levels, ensuring the linking of resource allocation to strategic and operational planning; compliance with School approved financial policies; ensuring all staff are aware of the existence and extent of the School’s financial regulations.
  • Support execution of fund-raising plans.

Leadership, Team and Pupil Development- 20%

  • Apply knowledge and understanding of leadership concepts and practice to develop staff and pupils.
  • Demonstrate a clear commitment to develop, empower and support effective teams and individuals at all levels.
  • Deal with staff recruitment matters that fall within the remit of the School.
  • Create a supportive working environment for all staff in the School and fostering their career development.
  • Ensure that staff review and development is completed in a timely manner (including PMDS).
  • Ensure that a succession plan is formulated and implemented and monitored at all levels within the school
  • Approve outside learning activities of staff members in accordance with school regulations.
  • Develop, promote and foster a culture of respect, discipline, good behaviour creating a culture of appropriate ethos setting a high expectation for all staff and pupils.
  • Model good practice in all interactions with pupils including direct engagement in pupils learning experience.

Building Community- 5%

  • Develop and maintain partnerships with parents and children, government and other associations and schools.
  • Create and improve effective working relationships with all those involved with the school working proactively to resolve any issues arising.
  • Maximise joint working with the local community building on the principle of interdependence of school and community.
  • Ensure that high quality liaison and consultations within the school structures for the benefit of all relevant stakeholders.
  • Liaise with the Ministry of Education, Examinations Council of Zambia and other relevant education bodies in the country and overseas on educational matters and placements of pupils and attend various meetings such as management, Heads of Departments, etc for the successful running of the school.

Enrolment and School Development-5%

  • Represent and explain the school mission and enrolment policies and practices to prospective student
  • Ensure that admissions comply with school standards to in line with School objectives.

KNOW HOW AND EXPERIENCE:

 

Qualification:

  • Grade 12 certificate
  • Degree in Education, Economics, Business Administration, marketing or other related business disciplines
  • Masters in Education in Arts or Science; MBA with Education or general MBA
  • At least 10 years of demonstrable post experience as Head of a School or at a senior management level of a school
  • Good Understanding of financial management principles, project management and contract management
  • Strong strategy implementation and drive, problem solving and change management skills
  • Strong self-evident report writing and researching skills
  • Excellent computer skills (MS Word, Excel, Power Point etc)
